My Sister is Taking the Challenge

May 4, 2012 2 Comments

Here is a story that is both heartwarming & a little heart wrenching at the same time. My sister called to tell me that she will be walking in the Susan G. Komen 3-day walk to fight breast cancer later this year in Chicago. She just found out today that she had been registered by my niece, Gabby, as a birthday present. Gabby wanted to find a truly special present for her mum (I admit, I knew about this in advance) and knew that raising money for this cause together would mean more than any tangible gift she could purchase.

What Gabby didn’t realize, is that our mother lost her battle to breast cancer on August 10, 1996 – and the 3-Day Chicago begins on August 10! Coincidence – or divine intervention? Our family has lost 3 women to this disease, and we do not plan to lose any more. If you have been affected in any way by this horrible disease – then I ask you to consider sponsoring my sister or my niece on this incredible journey for a noble cause!

A bit more from my sister:

“I have taken on an incredible challenge. On August 10, I’ll be walking 60 miles over the course of three days, camping out at night with thousands of other women and men taking this journey with me.

It’s for an event called the Susan G. Komen 3-Day™. One hundred percent of the net proceeds from the 3-Day benefit Komen and fund innovative global breast cancer research and local community programs supporting education, screening and treatment. Susan G. Komen™ works hard to build a future without breast cancer, and I plan on raising a minimum of $2500 to help bring us closer to that goal.”

I found this picture of my sister and my niece from a cruise we all took in 2009 for our Dad’s 75th birthday. They walked the decks of the cruise ship to help raise money for breast cancer research, so the story continues…
