Discovering an Old Synagogue in Auckland New Zealand

I was surprised last week to see this “Old Synagogue” sign on one of the campus buildings at Auckland University.  (Surprised because I live here in Auckland and didn’t know that an older Synagogue existed before walking by and seeing it.)

Here is the building, now the University House of Auckland University.  You can see the Old synagogue sign on the fence post:

Old synagogue in Auckland

Trivia: If the signs date is correct 1858 – 1968, it is nearly as old as the city itself as Auckland was founded in 1840. If you want to learn more about the early Jewish history in New Zealand, check out this book:  Not Strictly Kosher: Pioneer Jews in New Zealand (1831-1901). While I have yet to read it, it claims to be the only comprehensive source of information on Jewish social history in New Zealand.

It is certainly not as old as some of the synagogues we have seen around the world, like in Prague or Morocco.

Did you know that this old synagogue existed in Auckland?

That is a beautiful old building. There are many old synagogues in the Southeastern US that were, long ago, turned into something else (such as a hardware store). We have seen a few in our travels – and will seek them out if we know of one along our route. One of my favorite old synagogues is in Natchez, MS.

We will have to seek out this building if we ever make it to NZ.

It is so nice that, even though the building may have taken on a new purpose, the history is still noted.
