This simple tomato ketchup recipe allows you to change the flavor to your liking and create a version that finally tastes the way you want it to.
I started making my own ketchup because I couldn’t find one I liked after I moved. The most popular brand in my area has a very strong clove flavor that overpowers everything else. I wanted ketchup with a classic sweet and sour tomato flavor and only a hint of spice (clove or otherwise).
After I learned how to make tomato ketchup and made my first batch, I realized how easy it is to change the proportions and even the spices to come up with other flavor variations.
What you need to make homemade ketchup
- Tomato passata (puree) – the base for that classic tomato flavor
- Vinegar (white or apple cider) – adds the sour to this sweet and sour recipe
- Sugar – you guessed it, this adds the sweet
- Salt – enhances the flavor
- Clove powder – for me, less is better
- Optional – garlic powder, paprika, cayenne powder, liquid smoke
Tips for making our recipe
Taste the sauce as it’s cooking. You can adjust the sweetness, acidity, and spice on the fly.
I like to make a decent-sized batch and store it in the fridge. I use it anywhere I would use ketchup. It works well with fries, burgers, and grilled meats. I also like it as a base for a quick barbecue sauce.

Easy tomato ketchup recipe
This easy-to-make tomato ketchup tastes great and can be adjusted to suit your individual taste.
Ingredients
- 1 cup tomato passata
- ¼ cup vinegar (white or apple cider)
- 1 Tablespoon sugar (raw or white)
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1/16 teaspoon cloves ground (a pinch)
- Optional - garlic powder, cayenne powder, liquid smoke
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a small pot, stir well, and slow boil uncovered on medium for 15 minutes or until desired thickness is achieved.
- Refrigerate when done.
- Tomato paste can be used instead of passata (about ½ the amount needed) and the cook time to reduce the sauce will shorten to between 5 - 10 minutes.
Notes
- You can increase the vinegar for more tartness, adjust the sugar for your desired sweetness or add any of the optional ingredients for a new flavor.
- Raw sugar and apple cider vinegar (vs white sugar and vinegar) add a more deep and earthy flavor to the ketchup.
